A Delaware man was arrested Friday for burglarizing a home after falling out of a stolen canoe.
Matthew Bullen, 20, of Fenwick Island and Nicholas Townsend, 23, of Ocean City, Maryland fell from a canoe when it tipped over in Assawoman Bay around 4 a.m. Friday, police said. Detectives later determined the canoe was stolen from a home on the 38000 block of Monroe Avenue.
Bullen was able to swim to shore, where he allegedly used a brick to smash the window of a home on the 38000 block of Roosevelt Avenue in Selbyville. He then entered and changed into dry clothes before going home, police said. It is unclear if anything else was taken.
Bullen is charged with burglary, theft and related offenses. He was jailed in lieu of bail.
An unsuccessful U.S. Coast Guard search for Townsend was called off at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Authorities are continuing to investigate.
