A dozen mayoral candidates and 29 City Council at-large hopefuls have filed paperwork to appear on the Democratic primary ballot on May 16.
Tuesday was the final day for Republicans and Democrats to file nominating petitions for the springtime election, and candidates for citywide office – mayor, controller, commissioner, council at-large, sheriff, register of wills – were required to get 1,000 signatures from registered party members. Those running for district council seats had to find 750.
Not everyone hit the mark. Terrill Haigler, a former city sanitation worker who has built a social media following under the nickname “Ya Fav Trashman,” announced the end of his council at-large campaign.
“Unfortunately, I was not able to secure all of the signatures I needed to make the ballot,” Haigler said in a video posted to Twitter. “This is not goodbye. This is definitely, see you later.”
Anyone disputing the validity of a candidate’s signatures must submit a challenge by Tuesday, March 14, which, if successful, could knock a name off the ballot.
Third-party candidates, such as City Councilmember Kendra Brooks, who runs under the banner of the Working Families Party, were able to begin collecting signatures of their own Wednesday. They must file their papers by Aug. 1 to make it on November’s ballot.
