Mayor Michael Nutter will rappel 21 stories down the side of a skyscraper tomorrow

Mayor Michael Nutter will be one of up to 80 people tomorrow rappelling 21 stories down Three Penn Center at 1515 Market Street as a fundraiser for Outward Bound Philadelphia.

The event, called “Building Adventure,” runs today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers with Over the Edge, which has staged similar skyline plunges in other cities to raise money for worthy causes, will assist participants in descending – some of them one-by-one and some of them in teams – down the side of the Center’s Plaza Tower 3. There is also a “toss your boss” option for colleagues who wish to raise funds to send their employers over the edge of the building. Nutter is expected to make the leap around noon, his press office said today.

Each participant in “Building Adventure” committed to raising at least $2,000 toward a total goal of $160,000. Those who raise $3,000 will receive a helmet camera and a DVD copy of the footage it records. $4,000 will get participants two tickets to a BNY Mellon-sponsored VIP event and $5,000 will enter them into a drawing to receive a one-day high ropes course. The total amount raised through the event is currently at $139,232 as of this afternoon, according to Outward Bound’s website. Click here to add some of your funds to the pool.

Outward Bound, currently celebrating its 20th year in Philadelphia, is a nonprofit that builds self esteem and leadership skills among disadvantaged youth by giving them the opportunity to participate in challenges and adventures

Sponsors of “Building Adventure” include Wells Fargo, BNY Mellon, Stockton Real Estate Advisors, Comcast, The Arthur Jackson Company, Aberdeen Asset Management and Stockton Real Estate Advisors, who owns 1515 Market Street and is allowing the building to be used. Individuals and organizations have also donated to sponsor students and other participants.
