McGinty enters race for U.S. Senate

Kathleen McGinty announced Tuesday that she would enter the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator in the 2016 race against incumbent Pat Toomey.

“I’m entering this race to be a voice for the kids growing up like I did — the daughter of a Philadelphia police officer and a restaurant hostess,” McGinty said in a statement released on her Facebook page.

After running unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for governor in Pennsylvania, McGinty became Gov. Tom Wolf’s chief of staff for a few months before resigning leading to speculation that she would run for Senate.

She is in competition for the Democratic nomination with former state rep. Joe Sestak.

McGinty served as environmental advisor to Bill Clinton and environmental protection secretary for Gov. Ed Rendell.
