Meet Me on South Street first debuted last August as a way to highlight some of the best offerings and specials that the unique and “#slightlyoffcenter” part of the city offers.
“The idea of creating a campaign that is beneficial for both our business community and people coming to shop and visit is something we always strive for,” explained Michael Harris, Executive Director of the South Street Headhouse District in a statement at the time. “This campaign intends to highlight the vibrant business community on and around South Street, with a specific focus on parts of our district that cannot be found anywhere else in the city.”
Since last summer, the initiative has grown, and has officially returned for the sunny season in Philadelphia in 2023 as an ongoing event series highlighting street activations and block parties in the district, as well as recurring events such as a new mid-week Farmers Market, pop-up music performance from The No Name Pops and more.
The festivities officially kicked off last week on June 15, with the South + Passyunk Farmers Market Launch Party. For those who missed the launch event however, this particular activation will recur weekly on Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. now through October.
Later this month on June 25, the Brauhaus Schmitz’s Summer Block Party will be in full swing with BBQ and cornhole, face painting, water balloons for children, and a Best Dressed Dog contest. Another highlight falls on July 15, when The Good King Tavern will host its annual Bastille Block Party.
Meet Me on South Street will also feature a partnership between the South Street Headhouse District and the Philadelphia-based pops orchestra, The No Name Pops (composed of the former musicians of the now disbanded Philly POPS), to put on a four-part summer concert series on South Street.
As a release states, the No Name Pops will be on South Street for monthly pop-up performances from June through August culminating in a full orchestra performance on South Street on Sept.9. These performances will range from quartets to big band swing, funk/soul sing-a-longs and even the full orchestra performance, all in different areas within the SSHD. More details and dates surrounding this particular facet are planned to be announced soon.
With the support of the South Street Police Mini Station, Philadelphians can now head to the area on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings to enjoy pedestrian-only streets through the fall. On these nights, South Street from 6th to 2nd Streets will offer opportunities to dine in the street, shop sidewalk sales, bar hop, check out the free art wall outside Jim’s Steaks, and much more.
Other Meet Me On South Street events coming to the area in 2023 include Free Sunday Arts & Crafts every week at Tattooed Mom; three new art exhibits celebrating the 45th anniversary of the collectively-owned and operated 3rd Street Gallery; and the longstanding Headhouse Farmers Market, hosted by The Food Trust every Sunday under the Headhouse Shambles, the release continues.
Located between Queen’s Village and Society Hill, the South Street Headhouse District ultimately spans 400 businesses, and it features some of the most foot-trafficked tourist destinations, including Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and Historic Fabric Row. After a successful South Street Fest, plus the South Street Art Market (which joined small businesses and local artists with a Double Dutch Meetup), the Meet Me On South Street event series aims to continue to welcome new and returning guests to the District, and not just enjoy it, but really explore it.
