Memorial ceremony to be held on building collapse anniversary

At 10 a.m. Friday, Mayor Michael Nutter and families of the victims of the 2013 Salvation Army collapse will gather at 22nd and Market streets, the future site of a permanent memorial garden, to mark the second anniversary since the collapse occurred.

Nancy Winkler, the Philadelphia city treasurer, mother of 24-year-old Anne Bryant, who perished in the collapse, will speak about plans toward installing the memorial.

The planned memorial was recently approved by the Fairmount Art Commission.

Of a $1.3 million budget, about 50 percent has been raised so far.

On June 5, 2013, the Salvation Army store at 22nd and Market collapsed as a result of ongoing demolition activity at an adjacent site. The collapse killed six and wounded 13.

Contractor Griffin Campbell and backhoe operator Sean Benschop are currently in custodyawaiting trial on six murder chargesfor the incident.
