Metro Philadelphia sold to Schneps Media

Schneps Media announced yesterday that it has acquired the assets of METRO US including the daily newspapers serving Philadelphia and New York City.

Philadelphia Metro continues its strong position as the largest daily newspaper in Philadelphia, with a heavy focus on Center City and transit distribution. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the beloved “Philly Metro” surpasses the Mon-Fri circulation of the Inquirer and Daily News combined. A quick-read format aimed at mobile consumers has allowed Metro’s ad revenue to grow, despite a downward trend in competing newspapers. An exclusive partnership with SEPTA allows loyal readers to pick up Metro on any train platform, including regional rail, subways and trolleys.

“Our expansion to the Philadelphia market is something we look forward to. We will be bringing our business model to this historic city,” said Schneps Media Founder and President Victoria Schneps in an article in Metro Philadelphia’s January 6 edition.”METRO Philadelphia is poised to grow tremendously and we look forward to working with the local community.”

The acquisition will provide Philadelphia with a more robust infrastructure to grow the Philadelphia paper, including expanded local news coverage, digital content and events. As the strongest edition in the Metro US family, Philadelphia enjoys a loyal following of readers and advertisers, who continue to get superior results from Metro’s print and digital ad platforms.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the Schneps Media family to elevate and expand local coverage in Philadelphia through digital platforms, events and by achieving a larger footprint,” says Susan Peiffer, Associate Publisher of Metro Philadelphia.

Schneps’ combined digital reach will now grow to 3.5 million unique visitors and 5.5 page views per month with over 300,000 email newsletters subscribers and 500,000 social media followers. In Philadelphia, Schneps plans to change the digital brand of the newspaper to metroPhiladelphia.com, which dovetails nicely with its goal to add more community-oriented news in Philadelphia.

“This is an exciting next step for our entire organization, offering a unique opportunity to enter the Philadelphia market and grow our readership to over 2.5 million readers in print each week and many more online,” said Schneps Media CEO Joshua Schneps in an article in Metro Philadelphia’s January 6 edition.
