Mayor Michael Nutter has appointed himself and several key members of his staff and administration to the Board of Trustees of the Community College of Philadelphia. There were seven new appointments to the 15-member board.
“Mayor Nutter has been, from the start of his term as mayor, deeply concerned about and invested in the issues of education and job training and workforce development,” said Nutter spokesperson Mark McDonald.
College president Stephen Curtis issued a statement welcoming the new trustees in which he said: “Mayor Nutter has been a strong supporter of Community College of Philadelphia. We have been fortunate to have consistent Board of Trustee members who protect the interests of our students and value our role in education and training in the region.”
The college is negotiating with the union that represents faculty and staff, which has been working without a contract since August 2011. Stephen Jones, co-president of the union, welcomes the changes. “We’ve had a counterproductive relationship between the management of the college and the faculty and staff,” he said. “We’re hoping that the mayor’s direct involvement is going to allow us to get going in a positive direction.”
