Mike Patterson OK after training-camp seizure

Even with minimal contact at training camps, there’s always room for injury. Or maybe something much worse.

Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson suffered a seizure during the morning practice session yesterday at Lehigh University. Patterson was alert and stable after he was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to head trainer Rick Burkholder.

“He’s absolutely alert, stable, totally communicating with everybody, even joking a little bit,” Burkholder said. “We won’t speculate what happened to him, other than he had a seizure.”

Patterson lost consciousness for about four minutes, laying on the practice field as teammates surrounded him to protect him from the sun. Rookie offensive lineman Danny Watkins, a trained firefighter, was one of the first on the scene.

“I’m not a doctor or trainer, the players aren’t, and that’s one of your toughest guys going down,” coach Andy Reid said. “So we were all on edge a little bit.”

Several other Eagles took to Twitter to express their concern.

“Praying for my boy Mike Patterson!! Keep him in y’all prayers twitter!!!,” wrote injured defensive end Brandon Graham.

Practice resumed about 15 minutes after the incident.
