The Marlins are in town, and they’re in a playoff race.
Currently in possession of the NL’s second Wild Card spot, Miami is in need of starting pitchers, and hitting the mound opposite the Marlins in Wednesday’s Game 3 will be Jeremy Hellickson.
Hellickson is finally starting to come around for the Phillies, with a 2-1 record and 2.63 ERA over his last four starts. He has one year left on his contract and, with pitching talent waiting in the wings in the Phils minor league system, the club would love to move the 29-year-old righty.
According to MLB sources, including Marlins MLB.com reporter Joe Frisaro, the Marlins are interested in Hellickson.
“The #Marlins will make a trade or two and this week they face someone on their radar, Jeremy Hellickson #Phillies,” Frisaro tweeted on Monday.
The only issue with a deal could be the return for Philly. The Marlins have a mostly depleted farm system and finding a good prospect match may be difficult, experts say.
Just about two weeks remain until the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline.
