A 38-year-old woman was killed and a 8-year-old girl was in critical condition after they were struck by a speeding car Tuesday night in Center City, authorities said.

Officers spotted the vehicle, described as a gray Jeep, at around 10 p.m. going the wrong way on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, according to police. Investigators said the car was tracked to the area of 13th and Filbert streets.

The Jeep turned onto Arch Street and hit the woman, who was walking with three children, authorities said. Police said Wednesday afternoon that the vehicle was found and that a person of interest is in custody. No further information was released.

Authorities said the woman was transported to Jefferson University Hospital suffering from severe head trauma and multiple fractures. She died of her injuries just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

SEPTA transit officers rushed the 8-year-old girl to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was placed in the intensive care unit with internal injuries and head trauma, according to police.

The two other children – girls ages 10 and 11 – were not struck by the Jeep, according to investigators. Police said Wednesday that they were being cared for by social workers at CHOP.

Detectives indicated that they recovered video of the crash.
