Movers and shakers: Breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies

With free agency kicking off today, we take a look at the Phillies’ state of affairs:

Starting lineup

Jimmy Rollins: Will J-Roll return? The guess here is yes since the Phillies don’t have a replacement. They know what they get with Rollins, who probably prefers to stay home — if he gets a decent deal, with five years on it.

Chase Utley: Phils get two more years of the former All-Star. But can Utley’s bum knee withstand the rigors of second base anymore?

Hunter Pence: Under Phillies control through the 2013 season. Pence is the lone member of the starting eight still under 30.

Ryan Howard: Will the ‘Big Piece’ return on Opening Day, after surgery for his ruptured left Achilles tendon? And will he listen to management and finally be more patient at the plate?

Shane Victorino: The team catalyst was arguably the Phillies’ MVP.

Raul Ibanez: The soft-spoken, hard-hitting left fielder has played his last game as a Phillie.

Placido Polanco: Phillies are on the hook for one more year at $6.25 million. It wouldn’t hurt to move Polly to the bench in favor of a younger, more traditional third baseman with some power. Is a trade for David Wright out of the question?

Carlos Ruiz: The Phillies still have the solid Chooch, but it’s time to start grooming a replacement.

Keep an eye on …

John Mayberry Jr.: The one guy off the bench with some pop moves into left or replaces Howard at first. Could he become the next Jayson Werth?

Domonic Brown: Former top prospect in baseball will once again have a chance to win an outfield job when team reports to Clearwater.
