North Philly day care center shut down following baby’s death

A day care center that was the site of a baby’s death has now been shut down.

6ABC reportedthat Sisters Childcare in North Philadelphia was issued an emergency removal, a move state regulators saidwill cease operations immediately. The action camefollowing the tragic death of a 10-month-old baby on Wednesday.

In that incident, cops told Philly.comthat the infant’suncle found an employee performing CPR on the baby when he arrived there around 1:00 p.m. Police said thatthe man then took the babyto Temple University Hospital, where the child later died.

Over the past two years, the day care center was found to be in non-compliance with several state regulations.

NBC10 reported that during an inspection in July, the state flagged two dozen areas of “non-compliance,”including: concerns about the lack of background checks on some employees; one staff member caught yelling at children during the inspection; and several caretakers who lacked state-required training emergency training.

State regulators visited the site again in Octoberand found the site had made enough changes to open on a provisional basis—with a plan in place to correct outstanding areas of non-compliance.

In a statement released to local media, Pa. Department of Human Services spokeswoman KaitGillis stated, “Our hearts go out to the family on this profound loss, and our thoughts are with them.”

State and local authorities said the investigation into the tragedy is ongoing.
