Not the same old Westbrook

It was pretty strange seeing Brian Westbrook, clad in a red-and-white uniform, confined to the 49ers sideline. For so many years, the versatile running back was the most dynamic weapon on the Eagles offense. Now he sits in San Francisco, buried on the depth chart.

“I don’t play. I just chill,” Westbrook told Metro after Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Eagles. “I’d like to play. It’d be nice to play every now and again.”

Westbrook saw the field just three times against his former team. Westbrook ran for a 6-yard gain on his lone carry and was wiped out by Trent Cole on a busted play. Meanwhile, the player he mentored in Philadelphia, LeSean McCoy, rushed for 92 yards.

“It’s part of the game,” McCoy said of seeing Westbrook. “He always told me that it’s going to happen to everybody. You can’t stay young forever.”

Before the game, Westbrook talked with McCoy at midfield.

“I almost came to tears seeing him,” McCoy said.

Afterward, the two shared a hug outside the visitors’ locker room.

So, what does the future hold for Westbrook?
“Try and win football games here,”?Westbrook said, “got to try and find a way to win.”
