Nursing home residents protest outside Nutter’s house

Several dozen people marched four miles from the Philadelphia Nursing Home at 21st and Girard to Mayor Michael Nutter’s front door near City Line Avenue yesterday calling on the mayor – as they have since Aug. 2008 – to close the 500-bed facility.

“We want him to stop saying he’s working on it when he isn’t,” said Nancy Salandra of Disabled In Action advocacy group. “We want to city to get out of the nursing-home business. There’s no reason it should be.”

Responded Nutter, “As much as I’d like to close it, for many of the people there, that’s literally the only place they have to go. What we should be doing is working together on this.”
