Officer shoots dog while serving warrant; suspect flees in underwear

Philadelphia police were helping serve a judicial warrant when one officer shot a charging dog as the suspect fled out the back door in his underwear.

Around 5:45 a.m. Friday at a house on Weikel Street near the corner of Ann Street, Philadelphia police were assisting the First Judicial Court’s Warrant Unit when one of the officers was charged by pit bulls who ran inside from the back yard, NBC10 reported. The officer shot one of the dogs in response.

“Once the dogs were in, they began to charge at officers,” Philadelphia Police Captain Nicholas Brown said to NBC10. “One officer fired his service pistol three times, striking the dog.”

The SPCA was called to care for the wounded dog, 6ABC stated, adding that the person who was being served managed to flee the home.

The suspect, who was wanted for failure to appear on felony drug charges, took off running east on Clearfield Street, NBC10 reported, stating that he was wearing only his underwear.

“Just his boxers,” Captain Brown said to NBC10 about what he was wearing.

The suspect remains at large, 6ABC added.

The injured dog was taken to the Animal Care and Control Team shelter in Feltonville and was doing well and receiving medical care, Philly.com stated in a related article.
