If you ever wanted to be part of Philly’s history, now is your chance.
As a release notes, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. (HPI) is seeking actors (ages 18 and up) of all ethnic backgrounds to work as storytellers and several people to work as first-person, costumed interpreters and history makers for the award-winning Once Upon A Nation program.
The program brings history to life with stories about real people and events that occurred in Philadelphia’s historic district and in Valley Forge. Professional storytellers share these stories and cover a variety of topics, including some that speak to issues that connect past experiences with contemporary events and interests.
Those who become part of the experience are stationed at one of HPI’s storytelling benches around the historic district in Philadelphia or Valley Forge National Historical Park. First-person, costumed interpreters, or history makers have the opportunity to portray real life people who lived in Philadelphia during the time of the American Revolution and the 18th century.
Auditions will be held this weekend on Jan. 24 and 25, and to apply, Philadelphians can send their resume and headshot to auditions@historicphiladelphia.org, and you’ll get info on times and other details.
Required skills include: acting (improvisation and ability to work from a script), interpreting skills, adaptability to various performing environments (from one-on-one encounters to large groups), general knowledge and understanding of 18th century Philadelphia history and the American Revolution, and a willingness to explore and share complex and sensitive aspects of history.
The release also notes that these auditions are for part-time, seasonal work with approximately three to four weeks of paid training and public performances from June through October. Applicants must be able to work weekends and holidays. Part-time paid seasonal work starts February 2025 with training and educational groups. The main season will run from June until September (pay $16 – $18 per hour, $14 per hour for rehearsal time.)
Candidates will be invited to auditions based on how well their experience and skills listed on their resume match the needs of HP’s requirements.
