One man killed, five people injured in weekend shootings

A man was killed and five people were hospitalized in five separate shootings over the weekend.

Officers responded to Cobbs Creek Parkway and Cedar Avenue in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia shortly before 8 p.m. last night

They found a man, 29, lying in the street. He had been shot in the leg, buttocks and neck, police said. The still-unidentified victim was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he died less than a half hour later.

In an unrelated incident, a woman, 39, heard gunshots on the 3800 block of Old York Road in Hunting Park around 2:45 a.m. yesterday morning. She soon realized that she had been shot in the left thigh and buttocks.

The woman is in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Friday night was especially violent, as investigators responded to three serious shootings, with two of them occurring mere minutes apart.

Police received a radio call at 10:50 p.m. reporting a shooting on the 6700 block of Linmore Avenue in the Elmwood area of Southwest Philadelphia.

Officers found a man, 27, sitting on the front steps of his home with multiple gunshot wounds to his stomach. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

He told investigators that he and his sisters were standing in front of their house when they heard gunshots coming from the area of 68th Street and Linmore Avenue.

Investigators said that the suspect is a 20-year-old man whose identity is known to police.

Two minutes later that night, officers at Mercy Hospital found a man, 25, who had been shot in the back and brought in by a private vehicle. He was transferred to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical but stable condition.

The victim told police that he was at North Paxon and Arch streets in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia when an unknown person shot him from behind. He was unable to give authorities a description of the suspect. Investigators with the Southwest Detectives Division are looking into the case.

Earlier Friday evening, two men were injured in a shooting at the Abbotsford Homes in East Falls.

Officers responded to the 3200 block of Authority Terrace shortly after 5:30 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that the two victims were standing outside when an unknown gunman approached them on foot and opened fire, then fled toward Ridge Avenue.

Both victims were taken to Temple University Hospital in private vehicles. One of the men, 34, was shot three times in the leg and is in stable condition, while the second man, 28, was shot five times in the legs and buttocks. He is in critical condition, police said.

No arrests have yet been made in any of the incidents.
