Paint your town this fall

October is ‘Mural Arts Month.’ How to observe it? Start with a party, a performance and a tour.

‘The Roots Mural Project’ celebration

This new mural tells the story of The Roots, from their quiet beginnings in Philly to their days of nabbing Grammys and giving us a reason to watch late night TV. Join the mural artists and Roots co-founders ?uestlove and Black Thought at World Communications Charter School on Oct. 27 for a celebration of the mural, which will officially be dedicated in 2013.

‘Philly Painting’ tours

Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn (aka Haas & Hahn) gave the 2500 and 2800 blocks of Germantown Avenue a little makeover, draping building facades in blocks of bold colors with the help of neighborhood painters. On Wednesdays in October, a ticketed trolley tour will detail the history of the neighborhood, the mural process, and the future of the project. Or join them Oct. 13 for a free guided walking tour and artists’ talk.

‘Peace is a Haiku Song’ performance

Philadelphia Poet Laureate Sonia Sanchez’s mural uses haiku to promote peace within our zen-challenged city. For the Oct. 17 celebration of the project, Sanchez and local singers, musicians and writers will perform during a free evening in City Hall’s courtyard.
