Papelbon blows save, Phils win streak ends

The Phillies had an unlikely goat in yesterday’s 5-3 loss to the L.A. Dodgers in extra innings. Jonathan Papelbon needed three outs to put the finishing touches on the team’s fifth straight victory, but the closer fell short.

Papelbon surrendered two runs in the bottom of the 10th and blew just his third save in 24 chances this season. Jake Diekman (1-1) eventually took the loss, after giving up a two-run homer to Matt Kemp. Former Phillie Bobby Abreu tallied an RBI single and scored the tying run off Papelbon.

Cliff Lee got the start for the Phillies and allowed one run on two hits in eight innings, but still walked away with the no-decision. It was the ninth no-decision for Lee, who has only one win this season (July 4).

Hunter Pence smoked a two-run single in the 10th to stake the Phillies to a 3-1 lead. Carlos Ruiz plated the other run with an RBI single in the fourth. Papelbon blows save, Phils win streak ends
