Philadelphia’s Navy Yard will be wagging with excitement as the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) hosts its 19th Annual Mutt Strut on Saturday, Oct. 4. The beloved tradition combines a scenic dog walk with a festive fall celebration — all to raise funds for PAWS’ lifesaving work.

The event draws hundreds of dogs and their humans each year, raising more than $120,000 annually to support PAWS’ mission of making Philadelphia a no-kill city where every savable pet has a home.

“Now in our 19th year, the Mutt Strut continues to be the perfect opportunity to come together with fellow dog enthusiasts for a fun, family-friendly fall celebration,” says Melissa Levy, PAWS’ executive director. “From cheering on adorable pups in costumes to supporting a cause that saves lives, this beloved tradition brings our community closer while helping the people and pets who rely on us year round.”

Walk, wag and celebrate

The day begins at 11 a.m. with registration and festivities at the Navy Yard’s Marine Parade Grounds. At noon, the Mummers will kick off the 1.5-mile walk through the Navy Yard’s scenic grounds. After the walk, the festival takes over with a full afternoon of activities, including a dog Halloween costume contest, agility courses and field games for pups of all energy levels, and paw print painting and pet portraits. There will also be “Ask the Vet” and “Ask the Trainer” booths on site for expert advice, and of course, adoptable dogs looking for their forever homes.

For the humans, there will be live music, food trucks, and a beer garden hosted by Dock Street Brewery.

Why it matters

As Philadelphia’s largest rescue partner and provider of affordable veterinary care, PAWS plays a critical role in reducing shelter overcrowding and connecting families with adoptable pets. Events like the Mutt Strut not only raise essential funds but also spread awareness about pet adoption, fostering, and responsible care.
