Pedestrian killed in Broad Street hit-and-run

A 56-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a speeding hit-and-run driver Sunday night on Broad Street in North Philadelphia, police said.

Investigators said someone behind the wheel of a 2013 Nissan Sentra hit the pedestrian at around 7:30 p.m. as he was standing in the center lane and attempting to cross mid-block. The crash occurred on the 3900 block of N. Broad Street, according to authorities.

Medics took the man to Einstein Medical Center, where he died a short time later. The PPD has not publicly identified the victim.

The driver fled the scene, though officers found the Nissan later that night a little over a mile away, on the 5000 block of N. 11th Street in Logan, police said. No one was in the vehicle, and it was towed, according to the PPD.

No arrests have been reported. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call or text the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

Between 2018 and 2022, there were more than 450 crashes involving pedestrians along Broad Street – significantly more than any other road in Philadelphia, according to a city report that recommended expanding the use of speed cameras.

In June, Mayor Cherelle Parker signed City Council legislation authorizing automated enforcement on Broad Street from the Navy Yard to Cheltenham Avenue. A PPA spokesperson said a 60-day warning period, during which drivers caught speeding will be notified but not fined, is tentatively scheduled to begin in February.

Broad Street will become the second Philadelphia roadway with the devices. Cameras were installed along Roosevelt Boulevard in 2020, and pedestrian crashes there have since dropped nearly 50%, according to the Parker administration.
