There are a few reasons for Philadelphians of all ages to head to the Penn Museum, but over winter break, kids specifically can explore the venue for free.
From Thursday, Dec. 26, to Saturday, Dec. 28, locals under the age of 17 can check out the Museum and everything it has to offer at no cost from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We know that early exposure to things like science, art, and history impact kids throughout their lifetimes,” explains Allison Krisch, Assistant Director for Family and Camp Programs at the Penn Museum in a statement. “For families who want to enhance their holiday experience, the Penn Museum offers a global adventure—shining the light on cultures from around the world—all in one afternoon and right here in Philadelphia.”
As a release notes, over Winter Break, guests of all ages can make their own winter-themed suncatcher in the Asia Galleries, play an ancient board game like Mancala in the Sphinx Gallery, enjoy a “pop-up” talk about one artifact, or participate in an interactive drumming workshop led by percussionist Joseph Tayoun. Each day at noon, visitors can stop by the Cookie Zone for a free treat while supplies last as well.
On top of free admission in December, Philadelphians can also head to the cultural venue to get some early Christmas shopping done on Dec. 1, with Museum Store Sunday.
In fact, Philadelphians can score 20 percent off all merchandise in both its online and onsite stores for the entire weekend: Friday, Nov. 29 through Monday, Dec. 2.
As the release also notes, shoppers can find a wide range of gifts for all ages inspired by the Penn Museum’s world-renowned collections—such as hand-crafted holiday ornaments from Kenya, umbrellas, silk scarves, hand-knitted wool mittens, jewelry duplicating the royal style of a Mesopotamian queen, artifact replicas, excavation kits for kids, hieroglyph-decoding activity kits, spices, teas, mugs, chocolates from around the world, Anubis as a cuddly stuffed animal, board games, and 1,000-piece puzzles.
