Pesky Nationals take series from Phillies

Ouch. That hurt.

Brad Lidge beaned Jonny Gomes with one out and the bases loaded in the 10th inning yesterday and the Nationals earned a 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Washington took two out of three from the Phils, who suffered their first losing series since July 28. The team had won 16 of their last 20 games.

Antonio Bastardo was credited with a blown save, after giving up a two-run, game-tying homer to Ian Desmond with two outs in the ninth. Bastardo hadn’t blown a save all season. Normal closer Ryan Madson wasn’t available for a second straight day.

Roy Halladay started and was on track for his 16th win, but was replaced by Michael Schwimer after an hourlong rain delay. Halladay allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, while Schwimer gave up one run on two hits. Lidge (0-1) picked up the loss after walking in the winning run.

The Phillies’ offense was fueled by a two-run bomb by Carlos Ruiz in the second, then a solo shot from Chase Utley in the third. Michael Martinez’s RBI single pushed the Phils ahead, 4-3, in the ninth inning.
