Philadelphia Gas Works is urging families, students, Philadelphia renters and homeowners, to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to receive up to $1,000 in free money for their natural gas bills. LIHEAP grants are available for both homeowners and renters, and do not have to be repaid.

The LIHEAP application period is now open.

Applicants must meet household income requires to be eligible for LIHEAP. Eligibility guidelines are available online (pgworks.com).

To apply for LIHEAP, Philadelphians can text the word “CASH” to 77037 to receive an application, or download the application online. There are also Neighborhood Energy Centers located throughout the city — Frankford CDC (4667 Paul St.), Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry (35 W. Chelten Ave.), New Kensington – NKCDC (2771 Ruth St., Suite 1), Nicetown CDC (4300 Germantown Ave.), Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (301 N 9th St.), and Strawberry Mansion NAC (2829 W Diamond St.) — as well as the Pennsylvania’s LIHEAP Assistance Office (1163. S. Broad St.). A complete listing of energy centers can also be found on the PGW website.

“All of our customers deserve access to affordable, safe, and reliable natural gas service without compromising their basic needs,” said Denise Adamucci, Senior Vice President, Customer and Regulatory Affairs at PGW.  “We are committed to easing the financial energy burden on hardworking Philadelphians.

“Please share this valuable information with family, friends, and neighbors who may benefit from the LIHEAP grant as we approach colder months.”
