Philadelphia groups plan additional Trump protests

Demonstrations against Donald Trump since his election as president have been ongoing around the nation and in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the First Amendment.

Thousands haveattended peaceful protests around Philadelphia. Protests have taken place every single day since he was elected last week.

There are several more anti-Trump protests coming up soon, as well as organizing meetings for activists to strategize about how to oppose the future president.

Protests for Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20 are already being planned as well. A “Million Women March” is being called for Jan. 21 in Washington, the day after Trump’s inauguration.

Tuesday, Nov. 15

“March For Love Day 6: Fight Oppression And Bigotry Together” at 7 p.m., Center City.

The Equality Coalitionis calling for the seventh straight night of protesting Trump’s election, beginningat Thomas Paine Plaza at Broad and JFK. “We continue to fight racism and all forms of bigotry and stereotypes that prevent people from living lives of dignity,” organizers say.

Wednesday, Nov. 16

“Anti-Trump: Rally for Police Abolition” at 4 p.m., outside the Philadelphia Police Department in Center City/Chinatown.

Organizers from the Philly Coalition for REAL Justice are rallying outside the Philadelphia Police Department because their union, the 330,000-member Fraternal Order of Police, endorsed Trump. FOP Lodge #5, which represents Philly cops, followed the national union’s lead and endorsed Trump. Some black Philly cops with the Guardian Civic League disagreed with that choice.

The rally is demanding the the police department increase the use of body cameras and end the practices of stop-and-frisk and racial profiling.

“No Tolerance For Hate. Solidarity Against Trump at Temple” at 7 p.m., Temple University

Temple University students, including women’s and Latino students organizations, are calling for a rally at Temple’s Belltower before marching to City Hall. “Our president elect’s message of hate and violence is not welcome in our community,” organizers wrote. “The students of the Philadelphia area: will not stand for the acts of racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and Islamaphobia that have existed long before this election, but have been emboldened by Donald Trump’s win and will be furthered by his presidency.”

Thursday, Nov. 17

“Fight Trump: Build Resistance to Racism, Sexism & Islamophobia” at 6:30 p.m., West Philly.

The International Action Center – Philadelphia is holding a people’s townhall to to discuss building “the resistance to Trump’s racism, sexism, Islamophobia, anti-immigrant threats,” and plans for the “counter-inaugural protests” being organized by the Workers World Party.

Saturday, Nov. 19

“Love Trumps Hate – Protest Donald Trump in Philly” at 1 p.m., Center City.

A planned peaceful march from the Municipal Services Building at Broad and JFK to the National Constitution Center in protest of Trump and the electoral college, organized by The People United.

Friday, Jan. 20

“ResistTrump—Occupy Inauguration” at 9 a.m., location to be determined.

The Philadelphia Socialist Alternative is planning a Philadelphia protest of Trump’s inauguration.
