Philadelphia Literacy Day offers free books, community support and more

It’s time to turn the page, Philadelphia.

And thanks to Tree House Books, Sen. Sharif Street and Running Press Books, it’s never been easier. On Saturday, Sept. 7, Philadelphians are invited to celebrate Philadelphia Literacy Day with children’s book authors and illustrators, free books, community resources and more.

The event will take place on the 1400 block of West Susquehanna from noon to 3 p.m. and feature games, music, a bouncy house and you guessed it, books. Sen. Sharif Street’s office will be giving away free food and over a dozen of Philadelphia’s literacy organizations will be providing educational games and tools, and giveaways to help families start the school year off right. This year’s theme is “Oh the Places We’ll Go.”

Tree House Books will give away thousands of brand new books at the event. Authors will be on site to sign books, and give them away to attendees. Authors include Marianne Malone, Frank Murphy, Farah Rishi, Donna Gephart, Zenda Walker, Katherine Locke, Robb Pearlman, and Andrea Tsurumi. There will also be a book swap area with an emphasis on diverse books and characters.

People looking for advocacy causes can connect with the Philadelphia Alliance to Restore School Librarians or the Philadelphia Children’s Movement. Sen. Street is sponsoring resource tables including city and state agencies.
