El Festival de Tango de Filadelfia calentará la ciudad este verano
Vuelve el Festival de Tango de Filadelfia.
Después de estar suspendido durante los últimos tres años debido a la pandemia, el festival de este año promete estar electrificada con programas y actuaciones para celebrar la décima edición del gran espectáculo.
El festival, que tendrá lugar este verano del 2 al 5 de junio, atrae a cientos de bailarines de tango de todo el país a Filadelfia para participar en talleres de tango, conciertos, bailes sociales, conferencias sobre temas de tango, películas de tango y paneles de discusión, entre otros, según un comunicado. Además, el festival brinda la oportunidad de comprar ropa y zapatos de tango con una variedad de vendedores.
Aquellos que buscan aprender esta forma de arte también pueden asistir: se ofrecen actividades para bailarines principiantes y también hay un pase para aquellos que solo están interesados en conciertos y películas. El festival se lleva a cabo en el Lithuanian Music Hall en la sección Port Richmond de Filadelfia (2715 E. Allegheny Ave.), que cuenta con un salón de baile de 5500 pies cuadrados, así como muchos otros espacios para programas.
El evento también contará con una fiesta en la Escuela Argentina de Tango de Filadelfia, la organización presentadora, en Fishtown.
Como novedad este año, el festival tiene una asociación de medios con NBC10/Telemundo62. Otra adición es el hecho de que los pianistas tocarán en un piano de cola Steinway, hecho posible por Jacobs Music Company, que se ha hecho un nombre como uno de los representantes exclusivos de la región triestatal para pianos Steinway & Sons nuevos y auténticamente restaurados, Steinway’s Boston y pianos Essex.
Para diferenciarse, el Festival de Tango de Filadelfia seguirá dos temas para 2022.
En primer lugar, el festival celebrará las contribuciones de Mujeres en el Tango con un elenco femenino de maestras, bailarinas y DJs en el evento principal. Históricamente, los bailarines eran los “líderes” y recibían la mayor parte de los elogios, los ingresos y la fama; sin embargo, el festival tendrá como objetivo apoyar un cambio radical en el tango en todo el mundo, una nueva realidad donde los roles de tango (líder y seguidor) son independientes de roles de género, y donde todos los géneros y sexualidades sean igualmente bienvenidos y respetados.
Los artistas destacados del festival incluirán maestras e intérpretes de renombre mundial, todas las cuales han realizado un trabajo importante como organizadoras de tango, defendiendo los derechos de las mujeres en el tango, creando espacios de tango queer y creando eventos que subvierten los estereotipos de género, según un comunicado.
En segundo lugar, el Festival de Tango de Filadelfia también presentará música en vivo todas las noches a través de conciertos con butacas y bailes sociales con música en vivo. El festival presenta a “grandes favoritos del público“, como los artistas argentinos Juan Villarreal y Patricio Crom, quienes hacen su debut en Estados Unidos en el festival. La destacada orquesta completa de tango Tipica Messiez también hará su primera aparición desde la pandemia. En total, el festival ofrecerá tres conciertos con butacas y cinco bailes sociales de música en vivo, presentados por 12 músicos diferentes, la mayoría de los cuales viajan desde Buenos Aires para presentarse.
“El Festival de Tango de Filadelfia 2022 es una celebración de cuatro días de la vida , una que necesitamos especialmente en este momento. Los bailarines de tango están motivados por el deseo de abrazar y bailar con muchas personas diferentes, para deleitarse con una variedad de conexiones y experiencias diferentes en el transcurso de una noche o de toda la vida. La pandemia lo hizo imposible. Hay mucho deseo reprimido de conectarse, estar juntos, aprender y disfrutar escuchando música y bailando, y el festival ofrece el vehículo perfecto para la realización de todos estos deseos”, dijo Meredith Klein, Coordinadora del Festival y Directora de la Escuela de Tango Argentino de Filadelfia.

En total, el Festival de Tango de Filadelfia presenta 40 actividades diferentes que incluyen 20 talleres de baile de tango (cuatro dirigidos a principiantes), tres conciertos con butacas, cinco bailes sociales (todos con música en vivo y música grabada por expertos), dos paneles de discusión, una conferencia, dos proyecciones de documentales y tres clases de yoga. El festival comienza el 2 de junio con un concierto de apertura a las 8 p.m. y un baile social (llamado “milonga”) hasta las 2 a.m.

The Philadelphia Tango Festival is back.
After being on hold over the past three years due to the pandemic, this year’s showcase promises to be electrified with programs and performances to celebrate the 10th edition of the extravaganza.
The festival, which will take place this summer from June 2 – 5, draws hundreds of tango dancers throughout the nation to Philadelphia to participate in tango workshops, concerts, social dances, lectures on tango subjects, tango films, panel discussions and more, according to a release. In addition, the festival provides an opportunity to purchase tango clothing and shoes with a variety of vendors.
Those looking to learn the art form are also welcome to attend—activities are offered for beginning dancers, and there is also a pass for those only interested in concerts and films. The festival takes place at the Lithuanian Music Hall in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia (2715 E. Allegheny Ave.) which features a 5,500 square foot ballroom, as well as many other program spaces.
The event also will host an after-party at the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School—the presenting organization—in Fishtown.
New this year, the festival has a media partnership with NBC10/Telemundo62. Another addition is the fact that pianists will perform on a Steinway Grand Piano, made possible by Jacobs Music Company, who has made their name as one of the Tri-state region’s exclusive representatives for new and authentically restored Steinway & Sons pianos, Steinway’s Boston and Essex pianos.
To set itself apart, the Philadelphia Tango Festival will follow two themes for 2022.
Firstly, the festival will celebrate the contributions of Women in Tango with an all-female cast of teachers, dance performers and main event DJs. Historically, male dancers were the “leaders” and received the lion’s share of accolades, revenue and fame—however, the festival will aim to support a sea change in tango worldwide, a new reality where tango roles (leader and follower) are independent of gender roles, and where all genders and sexualities are equally welcome and respected.
The featured festival artists will include world-renowned female teachers and performers, all who have done important work as tango organizers— advocating for women’s rights in tango, creating queer tango spaces, and creating events that subvert gender stereotypes, a release states.
Secondly, the Philadelphia Tango Festival will also present live music every night through both seated concerts and live music social dances. The festival features “huge crowd-pleasers” like Argentine artists Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom, who are making their U.S. debut at the festival. The prominent full tango orchestra Tipica Messiez will also be making its first appearance since before the pandemic. In total, the festival offers three seated concerts and five live music social dances, presented by 12 different musicians, the majority of whom are traveling from Buenos Aires to perform.
“The 2022 Philadelphia Tango Festival is a four-day celebration of life, one that we especially need right now. Tango dancers are driven by the desire to embrace and dance with many different people, to delight in a variety of different connections and experiences over the course of a night, or a lifetime. The pandemic made this impossible. There is a lot of pent-up desire to connect, to be together, to learn, and to enjoy listening to music and dancing, and the festival offers the perfect vehicle for the realization of all of these desires,” says Meredith Klein, Festival Coordinator and director of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School.
