Philadelphia Zoo celebrates 150 years

The Philadelphia Zoo has been a staple in the city and a leader in animal conservation for well over a century. How long exactly? As of July 1, America’s first Zoo will turn 150 years old. And the Philadelphia Zoo has grand plans to celebrate the milestone.

When the Philadelphia Zoo first opened its doors in 1874, it welcomed 3,000 guests to what was then a brand new experience. Since then, it has proven to be a timeless excursion and has now welcomed more than 100 million people onto its grounds. To commemorate that rich history and in appreciation of those who have contributed and supported the Zoo over these many years, the Zoo is hosting a celebration that begins this week and runs through July.

The Philadelphia Zoo is offering a plethora of different promotions, including a special $150 ticket bundle available June 6 through Labor Day weekend (Monday, Sept. 2). In this bundle, guests receive two adult tickets, two children’s tickets, and a Zoo attractions pass that includes two nature blazer scavenger hunt wristbands and four tickets each for the Rainforest Carousel, SEPTA PZ Express Train, and Wings of the World. This bundle is only available online only.

The Zoo will also offer a special membership deal for $150 from Thursday, June 6, through Monday, July 1. Enjoy admission for two adults (18+), admission for 2 children (17 & under) each visit, twoNature Blazer Scavenger Hunt Wrist Bands for the first visit, parking, special members-only events, and ten percent off select attractions, General Admission guest, LumiNature and Summer Ale Fest tickets, and Behind-the-Scenes experiences. This deal is also only available online.

In addition to the ticket and membership promotions, the Philadelphia Zoo will host several celebration events as well.

From Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30, the Zoo invites guests to experience its grounds with a 150th-themed twist. The first 150 guests on each day will receive a commemorative “150 Years of Philly Zoo” pin. The Zoo’s animal habitats will have additional 150th themes, and the Conservation Education team will host a daily history tour starting at 10:30 a.m. on Impala Plaza, in addition to other activities.

On Monday, July 1, the Zoo will officially celebrate its 150th grand opening anniversary with live music at the entrance. The 150th Anniversary-themed decor will once again be seen, and the Conservation Education team will continue to host the daily history tour. Dietz & Watson will also sell $1.50 hot dogs at the Zoo to join in on the celebration.

Wawa Welcome America will also host a Philadelphia Zoo 150th Anniversary Celebration just outside the Zoo from 1 to 5 p.m., where guests can enjoy comp food samples, performances, face painting, arts and crafts, games, and more.  This celebration is free to the public and open to all ages. It will also feature unique opportunities to see some of your favorite animals and learn about the Zoo in a unique way. Finally, enjoy complimentary admission to the Philadelphia Zoo from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is first come, first serve, so be sure to join the party early.
