Philadelphia Zoo welcomes four African lion cubs

The Philadelphia Zoo’s family is growing.

Officials announced today that two of its African lion cubs birthed four babies at the end of June.

First time parents, 4-year-old female Tajiri and 6-year-old male Makini, welcomed the litter on June 26th.

The lion cubs are the first to be born at the West Philadelphia zoo in 18 years, according to a statement.

“This birth, Tajiri’s first, is a significant contribution to the lion population in the U.S., and we are cautiously optimistic as Tajiri continues to be a fantastic mother,” said Kevin Murphy, the zoo’s general curator.

While the cubs’ public debut has not been assigned, the cubs won’t be ready to leave the privacy of their den for at least three months, zoo officials said.
