Phillies acquire Edmundo Sosa from Cardinals: All you need to know

With just days remaining until the August 2nd Trade Deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies have finally made a move. Just not a big one. The Phillies have been reported to have acquired Edmundo Sosa from the St. Louis Cardinals. Here is all you need to know

Who is Edmundo Sosa?

Sosa, a 26-year-old infielder, has appeared in 177 games over four seasons with the Cardinals dating back to 2018. This season, he owns a meager .189 batting average with a weak 49 OPS+.

While Sosa’s bat is clearly nothing to write home for, the move appears to be primarily a defense-minded maneuver. With an Outs Above Average (OAA) in the 85th percentile, he has been one of the best defenders on the season.

In exchange, the Phillies have sent left-handed reliever JoJo Romero to the Cardinals. Romero has only made two appearances this season for the Phillies, having recovered from Tommy John Surgery. Over those two outings, he has allowed three runs in two innings of work.

Sosa will likely serve as a late-inning defensive replacement across the infield in what is currently a crowded infield consisting of Didi Gregorius, Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, Johan Camargo, and Yairo Munoz. Not to mention the inevitable return of Jean Segura, who is currently on a rehab assignment.

Of course, not all of these players can be on the Major League roster, so expect one-plus of these Phillies to be moved over the next several days.
