The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a trade on March 27th that sent utilityman Luke Williams to the San Francisco Giants in return for cash considerations and third basemen Will Toffey.
Luke Williams stole the hearts of baseball fans in Philadelphia last season. Williams was an under-the-radar prospect that was given a shot to play in Spring Training. He performed well and after being sent down to Lehigh Valley to start the season, Luke was one of the few minor leaguers to be selected for Team USA in the Olympics. After a fantastic run with the Olympic team, the Phillies called up Luke, who had earned the “Captain America” moniker. In his Major League debut, Williams got a start and with the game on the line, Captain America came through.
After the signing of Nick Castellanos, the Phillies needed to make some room on the 40-man roster. The Phillies designated Luke for assignment and the Giants claimed him. The two teams worked out a little deal and that would conclude Luke Williams’ chapter in Philly.
Will Toffey is the player coming back to the Phillies in the trade with the Giants. Toffey is a career minor leaguer who plays third and bats left-handed. The Phillies are most likely going to stash him in either Lehigh Valley or Reading to start the 2022 season. This move was more so to gain something instead of nothing for Luke Williams and will have no real effect on the main roster.
