The talk of the town has been the Phillies’ starting pitching in 2024. Between Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler, the Phillies have 2 (albeit early) Cy Young candidates. Add in Aaron Nola, Spencer Turnbull, Cristopher Sanchez, and Taijuan Walker and the Phillies have on of the best rotations (and depth) in the majors.
Well, you can never have too much pitching.
On Tuesday before the start of the series against the Blue Jays, the Phillies added Tyler Gilbert from the Cincinnati Reds. The Phillies are sending cash to the Reds for the lefty.
The Phillies originally drafted Tyler Gilbert in the 6th round of the 2015 draft. They traded him to the Dodgers in 2020 for outfielder Kyle Garlick. He was selected by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 Draft 8 months later.
In 2021, he made a historic first major league start, no-hitting the San Diego Padres while only allowing 3 walks. Since then, he’s been up and down between the majors and Triple-A.
He’s had a rocky start to this season in Triple-A for the Reds. In 11.2 IP, he’s allowed 17 ER. He’ll report to the IronPigs on Thursday and will join a rotation manned by Mick Abel, David Buchanan, Tyler Phillips, and Max Castillo (and occasionally Kolby Allard).
Gilbert last played for the IronPigs in 2019. If he does start for them, it’ll be his first as an IronPig.
The IronPigs are currently 12-18 in the International League.
