Phillies dominate opening phase of All-Star voting: 7 players advance to the stage

With the last update to All-Star Game voting, 6 Phillies were in were in position to advance to the next stage. Two additional Phillies were in 3rd place and in striking distance to advance.

Thurday night, MLB officially announced who was moving on and almost every position had Phillies.

Voting will open Sunday at noon and will continue through July 3rd at noon. Here’s who will have a chance to start the All-Star Game for the Phillies.

7 Phillies through to the next stage of All-Star voting

Bryce Harper

Bryce Harper has now officially been named an all-star starter for the first time as a Philadelphia Phillie.

In 2024, Harper has slashed .305/.402/.585 with 20 homers. If the season ended today, his 177 OPS+ would trail only his 2 MVP seasons. The 1st year full-fledged first baseman has also shown solid defense at his new position. He’s recorded 3 defensive runs saved and committed just 2 errors.

The National League’s leading voting getter will get an automatic bye and will start at 1st base for the National League.

Alec Bohm

Alec Bohm has been one of the biggest surprises for the Phillies in 2024. MLB’s RBI leader has hit over .300 for the majority of the season and .357 with runners in scoring position. He also leads all of baseball with 28 doubles. He hit 31 in the entirety of the 2023 season.

More votes than Shohei Ohtani?

Thanks to weak competition from NL thrid basemen, Bohm will most-likely star tat the hot corner for the National League.

Trea Turner

Usually, a 6-week-long injury absence takes you out of contention to start the All-Star Game. That’s as long as you’re not wearing the Phillies’ red pinstripes.

Trea Turner trailed only the Dodger’s Mookie Betts in NL voting at shortstop. Despite his injury, Turner has hit .329 with an .825 OPS. Phillies fans made their voices heard during All-Star voting and Turner isn’t even the biggest example of that.

Betts is now on the IL. Because of that, Turner could have a real chance to start at ss.

Brandon Marsh

In his 2nd full season as a Phillie, Brandon Marsh has continued to thrive in the outfield. Like most hitters in 2024, Marsh has taken a small step backward from his 2023 number. While he still has a .770 OPS, that’s down from .829 last year.

The Philly phaithful came through again for Marsh. Although, It’s not likely that Marsh will make it through the next round of voting. He does have a chance thanks to being a fan-favorite.

JT Realmuto

Although his batting average is a normal .261, JT Realmuto‘s .720 OPS is the lowest since 2015. Realmuto is currently recovering from meniscus surgery and is expected back sometime after the All-Star break.

He did surpass Mike Liberthal for the Phillies’ club record for hit streak by a catcher. He recorded a hit in 17 straight games from May 4-28th. Once again, Phillies fans willed him into the next round.

Nick Castellanos

Speaking about the fans, Nick Castellanos has snuck his way into the next round of voting.

Since May 4th, Castellanos has posted a respectable .775 OPS. Before that, he had been struggling mightily at the plate. On May 3rd, he was hitting .180 with a .488 OPS. He was an All-Star last season but it would be a shock to see him in Texas this year.

Kyle Schwarber

Kyle Schwarber was in 3rd place behind the Brave’s Marcell Ozuna. He made up a 60,000 vote deficit to move on. As usual, Schwarber has been a monster in June. He’s posted a .918 OPS this month with an on base percentage just shy of .400 (.394).

He’s had 17 homers this season and leads the league in walks at 59. For the 7th time, Phillies fans willed Schwarber into the next round. He’ll face off against enteral favorite Shohei Ohtani.
