The Rob Thomson era in Philadelphia has been extended another season.
This afternoon, the club announced a one-year extension with their manager, who was originally under contract through the end of this season.
An extension like this is to avoid the infamous “lame-duck” season, which means a manager is in many ways, fighting for his job. The move shows the organization has full faith in Rob as their skipper, and he will be calling the shots from the dugout for at least the next two seasons.
In addition to the contract extension, the Phillies hired Dustin Lind and Rafael Peña as assistant hitting coaches for the big league club.
Many people forget, but Rob Thomson has been with the Phillies since the 2018 season.
He was brought in on Gabe Kapler’s staff as a bench coach and remained in that role when Joe Girardi came to the club in 2020. It was, of course, during the 2022 season that Rob was promoted to the interim manager of the Phillies and then later the permanent manager.
In his season and a half as manager of the Phillies, Rob Thomson has a record of 155-118, which amounts to a .568 winning percentage.
He has made the playoffs in both seasons, going 19-11 in those games. Topper has a National League Pennant to his name, as well as consecutive appearances in the National League Championship series.
