Phillies injury and other updates: The latest on Ranger Suárez, Trea Turner, and more

Philly Sports Network brings you the latest updates on the Phillies injury front, including updates throughout the organization from manager Rob Thomson’s media scrum prior to Sunday night’s game:

June 2 Updates:

Ranger Suárez: Manager Rob Thomson provided an update on Sunday afternoon. When asked how he’s doing today, Thomson said he’s doing “a lot better.” He added: “Swelling is down. We still don’t know about his next start…maybe tomorrow.” Suárez left Saturday night’s start after being struck by a line drive in the hand. He was in good spirits when speaking with the media in the clubhouse after the game.

Edmundo Sosa: There was a moment late in Saturday’s contest when trainers were on the field to check on Sosa. He would stay in the game but was absent from Sunday’s lineup. Thomson noted, “He’s fine. This is precautionary. He’s had hamstring issues in the past. Just want to make sure we calm it down, and nothing happens…we don’t need any more hamstrings.

Trea Turner: Turner has been on the field, testing himself the last few days. Saturday, he worked on some change of direction. Thomson confirmed Sunday there was no planned date for his return, but he continued hitting in the cage and working on lateral movement while fielding ground balls today.

Luis Ortiz: Ortiz was in Philadelphia today for personal reasons and threw a bullpen, but will go back to Clearwater for his next bullpen, which will take place on Tuesday. The right-hander started to feel something in his shoulder following a couple of rehab appearances with Single-A Clearwater, but he appears to be back on track with his rehab for a sprained ankle.

Mick Abel & Griff McGarry: Both Phillies prospects are currently dealing with minor back issues. Abel came out of a recent start and is supposed to be playing catch to see how he feels today. No additional information was provided on McGarry.

Other Phillies updates and moves:

Yunior Marte: the right-hander had his third rehab appearance with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on May 31 and allowed two earned runs over two innings. It is unclear how many rehab appearances he will require before rejoining the big league club.

Freddy Tarnok: Not injury related, the Phillies claimed Tarnok off waivers yesterday from the Oakland A’s and sent him to Triple-A. Oakland’s former No. 13 prospect, Tarnok was sidelined to begin the year due to right hip inflammation. He also missed time at the beginning and the end of last season with various injuries. In his limited action, Tarnok posted a 1.83 ERA over five starts with Triple-A Las Vegas in 2023 and a 4.91 ERA in five appearances with the A’s last season.

We liked his arm; big-time velocity,” Thomson said before Saturday’s game. “He’ll go to Triple-A, and we’ll see what we’ve got.

Dylan Covey: To make room for Tarnok on the 40-man roster, the Phillies transferred Covey to the 60-day IL. Covey has not pitched since March 1 and is currently shut down due to a right shoulder strain.

Roughly an hour before first pitch on Sunday, it was announced that Kody Clemens was scratched from the lineup with back spasms. No other information is available as of yet. Check in with Philly Sports Network on ‘X’ for updates.
