Phillies look good as they win series against Mets… no, seriously

The Phillies offense played well Sunday. They took an early lead and added some insurance later to take it to the bank against the defending National League champion Mets.

Their pitchers pitched well too, pairing a quality start from Jeremy Hellickson with solid bullpen work from James Russell, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez.

Who are these Phillies?

With a 5-2 win Sunday, the Philshave pulled together for a series win in Queens as they head home to start their home slate against the Padres Monday.

Hellickson set the tone with five and two third innings and two runs allowed. That’s all the defense would allow as the Phils’ bullpen (subject of much ire in their opening series sweet in Cincinnati) slammed the door shut.

Offensively, Philly’s top four batters combined to go 6-for-15in the victory.

Peter Bourjos scored the game’s first run on a sac-fly off the bat of Freddy Galvis in the third, while a two-run homer from Odubel Herrera gave Philly a 3-0 edge midway through the sixth.

In the Mets’ home half, Yoenis Cespedes blasted a two-run homer to make it a one-run game. But the Philsbumped it back up to a three-run advantage with a Ryan Howard sac fly in the eighth and Andres Blanco RBI-hit in the ninth.

The Phillies dropped their fourth straight game Friday in the series opener before blanking the Mets Saturday 1-0. Their once lackluster record now stands at a much less ugly 2-4 through six games.

Philly and San Diego open Citizen’s Bank Park Monday afternoon at 3:05.
