Another day, another Cole Hamels rumor.
Jon Heyman, the respected baseball writer over at CBSSports.com, reported Wednesday that the Phillies are “sending signals” that they will offer Hamels a six-year, $130 million deal in the coming days. Heyman cited sources familiar with the Phillies way of thinking. If a deal isn’t struck by the July 31 trading deadline, the Phils are likely to trade him.
Hamels’ agent isn’t returning our calls, but this latest rumor/report is consistent with what everyone has been saying this past week. Hamels is scheduled to pitch Saturday here at Citizens Bank Park, so maybe we’ll finally get some answers then.
And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for … the Pete Rose reality show.
Yes, it’s true and it is coming to your cable box real soon. TLC has started production on an unscripted series — no working title yet — that will follow the former Phillie, now 71, and his super-hot model fiancée Kiana Kim around in their everyday lives. The two recently got engaged and are in the process of planning a wedding.
This does nothing to diminish our fond memories of Charlie Hustle, whom we interviewed in this space when his movie was just hitting the big screen. While Rose’s new reality show probably won’t get him into the Hall of Fame, it sure will be fun to watch.
Other former Phillies we’d like to see in reality shows … Jim Fregosi — yes the “smoke ’em if you got ’em” manager of that 1993 team; Dickie Thon (we just love the name) and, of course, Lenny Dykstra.
