Phillies Notebook: Trade Worley for Revere, Young next?

Just when everyone thought Ruben Amaro Jr. was sleepwalking through the Winter Meetings, the Phillies GM pulled the trigger and surprised everyone.

The Phils sent Metro favorite Vance Worley and top prospect Trevor May to Minnesota in exchange for center fielder Ben Revere.

Revere, 24, batted .294 with 13 doubles, six triples, 32 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 124 games last season. He bats left-handed and won’t be arbitration-eligible until after the 2014 season. Revere has been compared to a young Juan Pierre.

“Ben is an outstanding, young, controllable center fielder who fits nicely with our club,” said Amaro.

The price was steep as the Phils gave up Worley (18-13, 3.50 ERA in 46 career starts) and the 23-year-old May, who struck out 151 in 149.2 innings pitched.

Young deal on table

It’s up to Michael Young if he wants to play in South Philadelphia.

The Phillies have a deal on the table to acquire Young from Texas, according to multiple reports. However, Young owns a no-trade clause and the Phils were waiting on a final decision from the third baseman.

Young, 36, a 12-year veteran, had the worst year of his career in 2012 hitting .277 with eight homers and 67 RBIs. He’s batted better than .300 seven times in his career and won the 2005 American League batting title.

Phils take two in Rule 5 draft

The Phillies selected outfielder Ender Inciarte in the first round (15th overall) of the Rule 5 draft Thursday, according to scouting director Mike Ondo.

Inciarte, 22, combined to hit .307 with 28 doubles, 46 steals and 47 RBIs while spending time in two Single-A affiliates. He was originally signed by Arizona in 2008.

The team also took left-handed pitcher Brendan Lafferty in the minor-league portion of the draft. Lafferty, 26, went 1-1 with a 4.77 ERA in 43 relief appearances in 2012. He comes over from the Royals organization.
