Phillies place Placido Polanco on the disabled list

The Phillies confirmed the inevitable yesterday and placed Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list.

Polanco hasn’t played since Aug. 6 when he suffered a sports hernia. The third baseman also missed 19 games in July while dealing with lower-back inflammation.

The 35-year-old had been contemplating surgery to fix the problem, but opted against it. The procedure would likely end his season.

“If I have surgery, I’m out for the year,” Polanco told the team’s website.

In 89 games, Polanco is batting .275 with four home runs, 11 doubles and 40 RBIs. He was voted to start the All-Star Game, but had to sit out due to injury.

The Phils called up reliever Michael Schwimer from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, while placing injured starter Joe Blanton on the 60-day DL.

Phils catcher Carlos Ruiz was also out of the lineup last night after taking a foul ball to the groin. He was diagnosed with a left testicle contusion.
