Phillies rookie headed for surgery

If it wasn’t Ben Francisco’s job already, it is now.

Domonic Brown hopped a flight back to Philadelphia yesterday morning. The rookie is expected to undergo surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand tomorrow.

Brown broke the hamate bone, after hitting a foul ball in the second inning of Saturday’s game against the Pirates. He could be sidelined from four to six weeks.

“He was just upset that he has the injury, and anybody would,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told the team’s official website. “I think he’s OK.”

Francisco, who suffered the same injury in 2003, is pretty much penciled in to be the team’s Opening Day starter in right field. He’s hitting .421 with two home runs and six RBIs in seven games. Amaro said that he doesn’t plan to make a roster move.

“It takes somebody out of the mix; but like I said before, I think we have the talent here in this camp to be able to handle the position,” Amaro told reporters.
