Phillies sign wild child Carlos Zambrano

Zambrano pitched for Miami in 2012 and appeared in the World Baseball Classic for Venezuela.

The Phillies signed Carlos Zambrano to a minor-league deal Wednesday.

Yes, that Carlos Zambrano.

It’s no secret the Phillies are desperate for arms, especially with John Lannan and Roy Halladay both sidelined. Youngsters Jonathan Pettibone and Tyler Cloyd have filled in admirably so far, but it’s always good to have veteran depth — even if it comes in the form of the wildest card in all of baseball.

Zambrano, known more for his controversial outbursts than gems on the mound, will report to extended spring training in Clearwater. The Phils must promote him to the majors before July 1.

“No promises were made,” assistant GM Scott Proefrock said. “It is just an opportunity to add to the starting pitching.”

Zambrano, 31, came into the majors as ah heralded prospect. His career ERA is 3.66 in 12 MLB seasons, along with a 132-91 record. He spent last season with the Miami Marlins going 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA.
