Phillies star catcher J.T. Realmuto to have knee surgery, lands on 10-day IL

The Phillies announced that starting catcher J.T. Realmuto has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 10. The team announced on social media that the issue was “right knee pain,” and he will undergo right knee meniscectomy surgery Wednesday in Philadelphia.

To this point, no timeline has been provided for his return. Catcher Rafael Marchán, who was with the club during the London series but did not make an appearance, was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Realmuto had been dealing with knee issues since early May. Suspicions arose about how much pain the durable backstop was in during Sunday’s London Series finale when he was pinch-run for in the ninth inning despite being fast and an excellent base runner.

Realmuto has shown toughness all season and dealt with a few issues last week in one game – taking a foul ball to a sensitive area, getting hit by a pitch, and being involved in a collision on a close play at home plate.

Marchán has dealt with injuries himself this year, starting the 2024 campaign on the injured list as a result of lower back pain experienced early in Spring Training. In limited action in the minors this season (13 games), he is slashing .233/.382/.395 with two home runs and eight RBIs. At one time, he was one of the Phillies top prospects. The 25-year-old has not made a big league appearance since 2021.
