Phillies’ Trea Turner Wins 2nd Player of the Week Award of 2024 season

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has won his National League Player of the Week Award for the 2024 season.

Trea Turner wins Player of the Week

Trea Turner received the honor in April for a torrid stretch and has taken it home again roughly four months later. He actually started his week with a hitless performance in a brutal loss to the Miami Marlins but then went nuclear against his former team, the Washington Nationals. In doing so, he helped the Phillies correct the course of their season.

Turner tallied his first four-hit game of the season in the Phillies’ narrow 3-2 win, which the shortstop walked off in the ninth inning. On the whole of the four-game series against the Nats, Turner had 10 hits (three doubles and a home run) and four RBI. He raised his OPS on the season from .805 to .841 in just those four games, three of which Philadelphia won. Even with the stinker against Miami to start the week, Turner posted incredible numbers.

After seeing how Turner started the month of August, it’s somewhat surprising that he took home a Player of the Week Award. In the 11 games prior to the series against the Nats, Turner had an OPS of just .400 and just eight hits to seven strikeouts. His great season was starting to slip but, in the nick of time, came through with a monster series. If the Phillies can get back to dominating the rest of the regular season, they’ll look back on this series and this incredible performance from Turner as the spark.

This is Trea Turner’s fourth career POTW award and his first time winning twice in the same season. He previously won in 2021 (week of October 3) and in 2023 (week of September 3). He’s the third Phillie to win a Player of the Week/Month award, joining POTW winner Alec Bohm, who won it the week after Turner won his first, and two-time POTM winner Bryce Harper.

The American League Player of the Week was Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis, who pitched 14.0 innings over his last two starts while tallying 15 strikeouts and allowing four hits, one run and no walks.
