The Phillies are headed to Miami for one final series against the Marlins this season. Miami is officially out of a postseason spot, but the Phillies are trying to increase their lead in the NL East.

The road team has favorable pitching matchups for this series. Ranger Suárez (11-6, 3.02 ERA) will go up against Adam Oller (1-1, 3.31 ERA) for the series’ first game. Zack Wheeler (13-6, 2.63 ERA) will continue to make his case for the NL Cy Young as he gets the ball in game two and will go up against Edward Cabrera (3-6, 5.33 ERA). For the series’ final game, homegrown ace Aaron Nola (12-6, 3.29 ERA) will go up against Darren McCaughan (0-0, 8.24 ERA).

Previous series

The Phillies head to Miami after completing a two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. Kyle Schwarber played hero in the first game. The Phillies were put in a 6-1 hole in the first inning, but Schwarber’s three home runs, one of them being a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning, were enough to mount a comeback. Game two saw a lot less drama. Kyle Schwarber led the game off with a home run for the second straight game and they ended up winning 4-2.

Miami comes into this series after splitting two games with the Washington Nationals. Miami struck out 13 times in a 6-2 loss in game one. The Marlins also struck out 13 times in game two, but they won 4-3 in extra innings.

Both teams are coming into this series fresh off of wins and will be looking to continue that here.

2024 faceoff

The Phillies lead the season series 5-4. They are hitting .271/.341/.426/.767 against the Marlins this season with seven home runs. Miami is hitting just .252/.311/.406/.717 with nine home runs against Philadelphia in 2024.

One has a lot to play for, the other is just playing for pride. Historically, Miami has always given the Phillies trouble regardless of either team’s skillset at the time. The Phillies are 284-240 against the Marlins all-time
