Ranger Suarez (12-8, 3.46 ERA) vs Jose Quintana (10-10, 3.75 ERA)
Aaron Nola was solid for the most part last night and Zack Wheeler excelled in the opener. It’s now down to Ranger Suarez to try and get the best of a lineup that’s only been building in confidence since the start of the postseason.
His hot start seemingly cooled off and Suarez started to wobble after the All-Star break. The Venezuelan has given up an average of 6 runs per game over his last 5, allowing 5+ hits on 3 occasions in that span. We know he’s still got that relentless production buried somewhere, and he’ll need all of that magic against the Mets on Wednesday.
Across from Suarez will be Jose Quintana, who has been trending in the opposite direction. Through his last five games, he’s allowed just 2 runs, pitching 3 shutouts and striking out 9 against the Brewers when it mattered most. This will be a tough game for the Phillies, make no mistake about it.
The Phillies were poor last night, but it just felt like one of those games. Dodgy bounces and crucial mistakes cost them dearly in the end and stunted any rally that could’ve been made. This team needs to be better, and we know they can be, so I’ll ride them for one more time knowing that they believe their destiny lies far beyond the confines of the NLDS.
