Zack Wheeler (16-7, 2.57 ERA) vs Kodai Senga ( 1-0, 3.88 ERA)

What a season it’s been for Zack Wheeler. The veteran has been nothing short of outstanding all year long for Philadelphia and especially in the lone clash against his former team. Wheeler only played one game against the Mets this year, but struck out 8 and allowed 2 runs and 7 hits. He’s been a real foundation of the pitching staff since his arrival and will be a key cog in the team’s playoff hopes.

Across from Wheeler will be Kodai Senga, who is returning after missing multiple months with a calf injury. Compounding that was a shoulder setback that made him miss the first half of the season. It’s a big spot for any pitcher to make their return, especially on the road in front of a sold out CBP, but his return allows the Mets to rest both Luis Severino and Sean Mannea for the coming games.

It’s not clear what his workload will be and if he’s going to be able to fire at his usual clip, but the Phillies bats will be waiting if he can’t.

This is a really intriguing matchup. The Mets are high on confidence after one of the most breathtaking playoff victories of all time, and the Phils are coming off of a practical bye week. I think the edge has to be with Philly here. They’re at home and we just don’t know what Senga is going to bring to the table upon his return. The Phillies clinched the season series 7-6 and I expect them to add another to that tally tonight.

I like Kodai Senga to throw under 2.5 strikeouts at -105. He’s pitched in just 5 innings this season and this stage is a huge one. If he’s on a pitch count, I don’t think he’s going to get deep enough into the game to pass this total.
