Zack Wheeler (7-3, 2.23 ERA) vs Kutter Crawford (2-5, 3.51 ERA)
Zack Wheeler is back on the mound this evening to face a Red Sox side ranking 9th in batting average but only 27th over their last 3 games. Wheeler has been nothing short of sensational this season and has allowed 2 runs or less in each of his last 4 starts, going at least 6 innings in each.
Across from the Cy Young front-runner will be Kutter Crawford, who has struggled in recent weeks. He’s allowed 5+ runs in each of his last 3 games, all of which have been losses. The Phils’ offense has been one of the hottest in Baseball and if there is ever a group to sniff blood in the water, it’s this one.
The Phillies are favored to win this one and they should do comfortably barring any real surprises. The Red Sox offense remains inconsistent and with a slightly concerning run of form from Crawford, facing an elite pitcher and explosive offense could be a recipe for disaster.
The only saving grace here is that the Phillies could well be fatigued after a trip to London. Prior to that, they bounced around the U.S on a run of road trips and while they’ve handles business relatively well, there is a slim chance that it catches up to them.
As a result, I’m going to back the UNDER here. Kutter is better than his recent games suggest which should limit some damage and it allows for a little breathing room for a Philadelphia team that have been running non-stop in recent weeks.
Betting pick: UNDER 8
I like David Dahl to record a hit tonight at -220. He’s only appeared in limited action for the Phillies so far but has shined against both the Brewers and Mets. Banking on a 3rd homer might be expecting a lot, but there’s at least reason to believe he can ride this wave of confidence.
