Frankford Hall missed out on all the fun last year. Opening one week before Philly Beer Week, they didn’t have enough time to put together an event.
Now, the upscale beer garden in Fishtown has the week’s can’t-miss happening. Frankford Hall is hosting Dunkel Dare, a three-day, beer-themed game show based on the wildly popular 1980s show, “Double Dare.” Four breweries — Sly Fox, Victory, Yards, Great Lakes — will battle it out in the outdoor beer garden on a re-creation of the “Double Dare” set. And yes, the real Marc Summers will serve as host.
“We wanted to do something completely different and off-the-wall,” says assistant GM Josh Mann. “We literally watched countless hours of ‘Double Dare’ and took notes.”
Mann said they researched recipes for the show’s famed green slime online. Key ingredient?
“Children’s shampoo … so it doesn’t burn your eyes,” Mann says.
Dunkel Dare will follow the same format as the Nickelodeon show, complete with trivia contests and physical challenges, like an ear-to-ear egg race. Each brewery is sending two representatives, clad in signature jumpsuits, to compete. They will be playing for a one-year spot in Frankford Hall’s draft rotation, a prize worth about 1,000 kegs.
“When I said Marc Summers, they jumped to it,” says Rick Anstotz, sales manager for Yards. “I told them, ‘No pressure, don’t lose.'”
The event is totally free for bar patrons. Just bring your nostalgia and come early. The beer garden holds about 300 people.
“No reservations, come on in,” Mann says.
