Philly eyes global historic status

Philadelphia could become the first World Heritage City in the U.S. this week after a meeting in Peru.

A delegation of city officials travelled to South America ahead of a vote scheduled for Friday, with the expectation that the city’s two-year bid to gain the status will be accepted.

There are about 260 cities across the globe —none in the United States. Officials say the designation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will boost the city’s international brand.

The Organization of World Heritage Cities is dedicated to preserving global history and culture for future generations.

The Philadelphia delegation has focused its bid on the city’s history as the birthplace of American democracy.

Independence Hall was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
